My students are 7th and 8th graders who attend a public middle school in a poor rural area. They come from families that farm and/or work in low-paying blue collar occupations. Unemployment has hit our area hard with over 40% of my students on free or reduced lunches. Some of my students live in homes without the benefit of running water or electricity. They are resilient, big dreamers, and extraordinary young people. They are HUGE Steeler fans. When a student becomes seriously ill, they pull together and raise money to help with medical expenses.
