I am trying to turn our playground, which currently consists of a blacktop area and grass, into an outdoor classroom for my preschool students. A part of this goal is to create a bike path and provide 4 tricycles for the children to practice their gross motor skills on. Studies have shown that unstructured play and movement, such as riding a bike, are fundamental to building the neural connections that allow for an individual to properly make sense of the world around them. These skills have also been linked to reading readiness and are important for the well rounded growth of my Pre-K students. This bike path and tricycles will not only provide a fun activity for the students to participate in, but will allow them to work on a skill that will help them reach their full potential, and become confident learners as they progress through school.
