As students move from Kinder, and now even from Transitional Kinder, up through elementary school they spend a great deal of time stationary. By using centers in our after school math club kids can wiggle and move as they learn. Learning isn't just about pulling in information from one source. Learning is about identifying what doesn't work and building plans to improve upon. In Math Club I work with kids who after a long day of school still want more. I want to give them more than just what we can do in a classroom with a single age group. I am asking for a complete STEM Learning Lab for grades, seventy-two Student Compasses and a Bridge Building Engineering Center. With these resources, some students will use their untapped engineering skills to craft bridges. Meanwhile others can work physics while creating roller coasters. While all of that is occurring students can practice learning how they are connected to the world and ordinal directions. Balancing multiple activities at once makes teaching after a long day like a well choreographed dance. Once the group has a strong hands-on compass skills and ordinal directions we can build compass courses. Students will love following the compass coordinates and directions to gather supplies needed for the day's Math Club activities. Donating to supplies and resources to our project will help Math Club kids continue to find the joy in math, engineering, technology, and science. This will add new levels of exploration to our after school math group.
