The children in kindergarten are always on the move and actively learning. They need a classroom environment to match their needs as little learners. I am looking to remove the traditional classroom seating and provide students with the opportunity to determine how they learn best by giving them options so that each day will be a new learning adventure. The children will choose which type of seat they want to use for each activity. Maybe it is lying on a bath mat on the floor, sitting in a scoop chair or standing. They will also be able to choose the type of work surface that they want to use, such as the floor, a tray table or a clip board. This will help the children learn to listen to the needs of their bodies and make appropriate selections in what makes the best learning environment for their individual needs. Research has shown that flexible classrooms such as this provide more engagement for students, increase team work and can even improve handwriting. Early elementary school experiences help students to set the tone for future successes and it is important that they learn these important 21st century learning skills early on.
