Opportunities for speaking practice are critical for students learning a new language. In my experience, puppets are a highly motivational tool for encouraging kids to speak. This set is perfect because it reflects how all of our students look. The books included in this project encourage students and their families to engage in books together in both of their languages which demonstrates the value of being multilingual and allows parents to support student comprehension with their richest language. The titles were chosen because they will introduce our kids to tales that have a traditional role in American culture, but also connect to cultural tales from around the world. The flexibility of the alphabet tubs is a huge benefit. The realia items can be used for building vocabulary concepts, reinforcing English letter sounds, sorting and classifying, storytelling, and more. Our students are grades K-5. These resources can be used in different ways with a variety of ages and language proficiency levels. We can use them with small groups and individuals as we work in classrooms and serve students in the ENL classroom. We are excited about the possibilities!
