My current classroom is filled with 4th graders who show an incredible love for learning. I have found that using hands on manipulatives has increased their academic achievement. In ELA, using a morphology and sound wall has brought engagement in their own reading skills. In Science, being able to manipulate their research products has allowed them to be fully involved in discovery of the world around them. In math, having fraction tiles, ten frames, number lines and other math related manipulatives has them going beyond rote learning into mathematical understand of the why. Ive been teaching for over 17 years and I still love to see the gleam in their eyes when they realize they have uncovered the answer or the the idea has clicked.
