I have a small classroom that needs to accommodate 25 students per class period. The desks I currently have are bulky and difficult to arrange for group work. They also take up a majority of the classroom space. I have 2 futon chairs on an area rug. The students race for those during independent work leaving the rest of the class on the floor. Flexible seating options would allow ALL of my students to learn in a comfortable environment that I truly believe would increase participation, engagement, and overall learning experiences. For example, I have special needs students in my classes that could directly benefit from flexible seating. The options to be out of a desk would be less constrictive and help them feel like any other student in the classroom. I have added different kinds of seating to my list such as comfortable chairs, rugs, wiggle seats, and balancing balls that are low to the ground. I would like to use lap desks for students to write on instead of a traditional desk. Some of my students are small and their feet do not reach the ground in the current seating situation. I have asked for tall tables with stools so students could stand and work if they choose to. I believe this would be a great help to ADHD students. I know I work better when I am comfortable and in an area conducive to group work...why not let that be available to my students?
