Self-regulation is an important life skill for all students, especially those with special needs. The students in my class have been working with the "Zones of Regulation" curriculum to learn how to monitor their own feelings and energy levels and to apply tools when necessary to help keep themselves calm, focused and ready to learn. During "Mindfulness Monday" my class practices different calming strategies and participates in various mindfulness activities. We begin each session with stretching and yoga. My students love to move and enjoy learning new animal poses and sequences. After "Mindfulness Monday" students are focused, positive and ready to take on the rest of their day! Providing students a space to recenter themselves increases their overall engagement, learning and emotional self-regulation skills. This project will provide yoga mats for students to use during our "Mindfulness Monday" sessions. The mats will give my students more space to practice new poses and increase their own awareness of their body by creating a defined space for their movement.
