A few months ago one of my colleagues transformed her second grade classroom by implementing a concept known as flexible seating. This concept defies the traditional classroom model, where all students sit in chairs and desks. Instead the students can sit on ball chairs, wobble chairs, bean bags, pillows on the floor, or crate chairs. This teacher and her students were featured on the local news, which has everyone talking about flexible seating! The wobble chairs have quickly become their favorite! We need wobble chairs which are beneficial to students because they allow students to subtly move in their chair, while still focusing on learning, and without disrupting others. This project will make a huge difference for the second and third grade students at my school. It will allow each second and third grade classroom to have 2-3 wobble chairs in their classroom. Many of these students struggle to sit still in traditional classroom chairs and will stand up, walk around, or rock their chairs. This can be dangerous because students could fall out of their chairs, or could be disruptive to the other students in the classroom. The students are in need of wobble chairs so they can stay engaged and focus on learning!
