To finish our year of AP Literature and Composition, students will read and discuss this year's winner of both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, The Underground Railroad. It is important after a year of studying works from the literary canon, that my students experience contemporary literature. Most of my students will not go on to major in literature, but all of them will be lifelong readers and I encourage them to engage in intelligent challenging works as they leave the classroom and move into their adult lives. This work by Whitehead speaks to our nation's history in compelling, beautiful, and sometimes uncomfortable ways, but it connects to our continued understanding of what it means to be American today. It is the perfect work to finish our year with and will inspire lively and cogent writing and discussion.
