If you aren't an educator you might have never heard of 'The Summer Slide' but it is real and nowhere near as much fun as it sounds. Also known as learning loss, this is the tendency for students to lose academic skills over the summer. According to Summerlearning it is one of the most significant causes of the achievement gap between lower and higher income youth. When you donate to this project students will be able to take the characters they love with them on their summer adventures. My scholars cried with Charlotte, Wilbur and everyone in the barnyard. They cheered with Gooney Bird, Mrs. Pidgeon and everyone in Watertower Elementary. They have become better readers and writers because of these fictional friends. Charlotte's Web is classic children's literature with the theme of lifelong friendship. This year the class has read the book, seen the movie and the play. I am asking for a paperback copy for each student. Gooney Bird Greene is a second grade dream! Students love her personality and teachers love the lessons she weaves into every tale she tells. The hardcover copy I am requesting for each student includes 3 books from this series. Students can reread the original and then continue on their own. Finally, what better way is there to keep track of where you left off than a fun bookmark. These fun, magnetic, Dr. Suess themed bookmarks will excite students for the next chapter of their books and their lives.
