Having cooking materials would allow my students to learn skills that they would take with them to use at home and as they grow up. Students will complete recipes and have the satisfaction of learning skills like safety, cooking, and baking within the kitchen. Students will complete a recipe weekly and those recipes will then be made into a book. Throughout these experiences students will learn skills that will help to increase independence at home. Our students often do not get these experiences at school or home due to lack to funding. Students will get the opportunity to eat and cook healthy meals. Students would learn to use baking utensils and bakeware (measuring cups, spoons, bowls, cookie sheets, pans, mixer) to create desserts and breakfast items with supplies. Students would also have the opportunity to learn how to create healthy lunch items using pizza pans, colanders, pots and pans, cooking utensils, and cheese graters. Students will also learn to make healthy snacks using these items. Students will learn about the importance of kitchen safety by practicing knife skills using knives, peelers, and cutting boards. Students will also learn the importance of safety through experiences by wearing aprons, using appropriate materials, and storing food properly (wax paper, tinfoil, plastic bags, and aprons, storage containers, crock pot). Students will also learn about ingredients and nutrition! Students will be able to take the recipes and skills they learn to better their home lives and communities.
