Collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking - these are the four skills that employers say are needed in their employees. Last year 90% of my math students said that they hated math and could not do it. Although I hope I made some movement in those numbers, the lack of confidence in the subject or willingness to try is, I believe, the largest problem we face. We cannot begin to enhance the skills needed until we make math something that students want to learn and feel that they can. I would like to change the way our classroom looks and feels - more like a small company or a coffee shop - incorporating creativity and collaboration and FUN in a space that - BELONGS to the students. Originally I thought to make those changes myself but then thought why not have them make those designs, plans and even build the furniture. Students would still master the standards but instead they would do it in a way that matters to them. The high top tables where students can stand to work or sit, an inflatable sofa and chairs (sturdy enough for dorm rooms!) and high stools are the beginning of the redesign process. Paint, decoration and arrangement of the pieces will be designed by them. Students will have choices of where to sit as they work in small groups and the inflatable pieces will be flexible enough to move as needed. By making the classroom a place where they want to be and allowing them choices in where and how they sit, this classroom will be a place for learning and excitement!
