"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.", said mathematician Paul Halmos. The problem is that many of my students lack the tools necessary to do their math homework. While a scientific calculator may be an insignificant cost to many of us, it is not in the budget for many of my students' families. It is heartbreaking to have to say "No, we cannot loan from the class set of calculators" to a child's request to borrow a calculator to take home to do their work. A new set of calculators is needed in order to be able to check out calculators to take home for those that need them. In 8th grade, we also graph linear equations. Having old wooden rulers with chunks out of the edges are not effective in drawing the accurate straight lines necessary. These old worn rulers cause the students to get incorrect answers after graphing the line. Students, understandably, become frustrated. Metal ruler replacements will be a long lasting solution for student needs for many years to come.
