The reading resources that the students have been previously using in class will not stimulate and motivate them to find that joy in reading and will not allow them to make substantial progress. The small paper books lacked vocabulary, rich conversation, deeper comprehension, and students were asked often to choral read the stories aloud as a group. Many students were irritated with listening to others read, stumble through words, or read at a pace that was hard to follow (slow or fast). This method of reading is ineffective. There are many benefits to literature circles. Literature circles allow cooperative and independent learning. Students can make their own choices about their learning which builds upon deeper engagement, increased intrinsic motivation, and allows them to have opportunities for guided-decision making. Last but not least, literature circles are FUN! Students are given the opportunity to talk a lot and bring personal experiences, feelings, and opinions to the table.
