Students have been learning Pre- Engineering concepts of Design and Modeling. Students' learning centered around wants vs needs, the design process, measuring, sketching principles and practice, as well as dimensioning. Students were then directed to use Adobe 3-D modeling software to turn hand sketches into computer aided drawings. Students created various sketches, and one in particular was a chess board. Students began talking about chess boards and how they like to play, but our school doesn’t have any. Students were polled to see how many owned chess boards at home. Approximately five raised their hands. That’s when students came up with the idea to make chess boards. Research was also conducted to understand the benefits of playing chess for kids. In a nut shell, playing chess improves concentration and memory, enhances reading and math skills, fosters logic, critical thinking, and creativity, and encourages and rewards hard work. I was able to obtain 100 boards to make the chess boards. What is needed is the chess pieces to play the game. There are 32 students in class that would each get to take a chess board home. 22 boards will be given to the school to have a chess club. 46 will be donated to 4 elementary schools that feed into our middle school. Five different schools and hundreds of students will benefit from these chess boards, as well as the students making them.
