I have taught in our little town of Kimball, South Dakota, a low-income, rural school district, for 32 years. I currently teach fifth and sixth grade students. As a long-time educator, I know that students need to have certain basic needs met in order to do their best in school. One of our students' most basic needs is comfort. Currently, the chairs in my classroom are too small and too short for my students. Feeling uncomfortable in their classroom workspace may cause students to feel self-conscious, which could infringe upon their ability to be their best selves and to do their best work during school. Student self-confidence and comfort with space are key features to better student focus, engagement, and academic success. Because my students learn in a variety of different ways, I use a variety of teaching methods, some of which include desks, tables, floor space, easels, etc. By providing comfortable chairs that are suited to my students’ age and height, I hope to better meet their flexible seating needs. I also work with students who have special needs. Having to sit in uncomfortable, ill-fitting chairs is another frustration and hurdle for them to have to deal with. I feel that providing better flexible seating will help alleviate that issue for them, and help them feel more confident and comfortable in my classroom. My DonorsChoose project consists of providing safe, appropriate, and colorful chairs for my students’ learning space. I am asking for donations for new student chairs in my classroom, to allow for adequate flexible seating in my classroom. I have found student classroom chairs at School Specialty, which meet safety, usage, and economic criteria. I would greatly appreciate any monetary help that you can donate toward my project. Thank you so much!
