My students work in full and small groups throughout the day for both reading and math. When they are in small groups, they are practicing the skills taught and getting hands-on resources. Fourth graders are exposed to many different genres of reading and are expected to comprehend what they have read. Not every student is at they same level and not every student learns the same way. I love the idea of using the Power Pens for reading so that students can work at their own pace and self check as they go along. This would occur during small group time. Students need hands-on learning! In 4th grade, math moves very quickly and is harder then 3rd grade. Many students still need practice with their facts. By using the Power Pen, skills can be differentiated by what students need. For example, some students have mastered their multiplication facts and so they can begin their division facts. This would be used during my math group rotation as an independent station. I feel these Power Pens will helps students become more confident with their learning.
