My students are deeply concerned with immersing themselves in the art of theatre. This includes all aspects from acting to dramaturgy to stagecraft. While the skills of acting, directing, playwriting, and improvisation can all be learned within the classroom setting; the skills required to be fluent in the art of stagecraft require materials that the school district is not prepared to fund. This semester my students want to learn the art of set design and construction. They are especially interested in scenic painting. We need basic power tools to be able to build the sets and paint supplies so they can actually practice and discover the intricacies involved with painting a set. We are having wood donated from a local home improvement store and paint donated from a local paint supplier. All we need now are the tools to apply the paint, and a safe space in which to store the paint. Without support from their community, I'm afraid these students will simply be performing a beautifully rehearsed play on a blank stage.
