Students today are under more and more pressure to learn more and succeed. And their teachers are under a lot of pressure to get them there. But that leaves little time for play and physical activity, oftentimes replacing physical education and recess for more curriculum time. This is the case in my school, with only 15 minutes allotted per day for recess for third grade. Allowing students to sit on exercise balls will not only improve their core muscles, but it will also help students get some of the much-needed exercises they miss out on with such little recess. The research finds that if their bodies are engaged, then their minds are too. If students are able to pay better attention in class, they may be more successful in the classroom. I am requesting 25 exercise balls to replace our chairs and improve my students' focus. I teach my students that one of the keys to a happy kid is taking care of their body. We all want our students to be successful, as well as learn lifelong skills to keep them healthy and happy. Teaching about the importance of exercise and movement as part of "sharpening the saw" doesn't go very far without practice. We all know how much energy the average nine year old has stored up and how much they like to move; let's let them use some of this energy to allow them to focus better and achieve more in school, while at the same time showing them the importance of movement and exercise for a healthy body.
