It is important for students to explore their own ideas and interests through play. With increasing academic rigor and expectations for 5-6 year old children, I feel the need to balance structured learning with unstructured exploration. Partners or small groups of students will use the materials while my assistant and I teach small groups for more individualized learning. The partners will build with magnetic tiles, have conversations about their car construction, or record their thinking about their Playstix creation on whiteboards. They can share their writings with the class, which builds public speaking and oral language skills for young children. Positive social interactions and cooperative skills are essential lessons students learn when building, writing, and exploring together. These materials will allow students to come to conclusions, make predictions, and begin to solve real world problems. For example, the best car design for speed, or the best way to connect pipes together to get the product where it needs to go. Excitement and engagement drive my students to perform, excel, and return to school, joyfully, each day. The project materials excite and engage.
