Students with disabilities deal with a lot of sensory overload, these materials will help students to calm their bodies and minds. Maslow's hierarchy of needs talks about students needing to feel emotionally balanced. If my students are not feeling in control of their emotions and their bodies, then they are unable to learn and make progress. These different items will help my students release those feelings in different ways and to focus on learning. Having these sensory items will help us determine which of their senses are overstimulated and which senses we can use to help relax each individual child. Since our school is a new elementary school we are setting up our classroom from scratch. These sensory stress relieving items will not only benefit the students I have this year but will benefit all the children who pass through this classroom in the years to come.
Yoga is a great way to teach students to feel in control of their bodies and emotions. With the yoga mats students will be doing yoga every morning to help with following directions, stretches, and breathing techniques. The yoga mats will help students learn about their personal space and others students personal space. I will be teaching the students that when they feel upset, mad or out of control they can use the breathing techniques to calm down.
