One of the most wonderful statements a teacher of resistant readers can hear is "Miss, I actually want to read the rest of this book!" Capturing the imagination and curiosity of struggling readers is often half the battle in helping them build their skills and confidence. I became an English teacher because of the world that was introduced to me through books and stories, and it is my desire to share this experience with my own students. The novels that I am requesting for my students could be the key to helping my English language learners see learning a new language as a key to opening up new worlds beyond the everyday. I want them to have the opportunity to see English as more than just words as they read vibrant, interesting stories. I have requested a small set of Spanish translations of the novels when available, because some of my students have been in the United States less than a month and are simply trying to survive in a new language. I want to give them a chance to experience these stories with their peers and to be able to engage in collaborative activities.
