My colleague and I teach science in a high-need urban middle school in our nation's capital. Our students are very diverse ethnically, socioeconomically and in terms of learning styles and abilities. At least one-third of the students are English Language Learners and/or are receiving special education support. Roughly 40% live in low income families and qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school implements Expeditionary Learning--a school reform model that employs long-term, hands-on learning studies of a particular subject that incorporate the required curricular content and grade level skills.
