Children are not made to sit still for long periods of time at a desk. In fact, it can be harmful to young children. Even though I give students "Brain Breaks," sometimes they need more opportunities to move. Alternative seating options, including the requested Wobble cushions and balance balls, allow for individual intervention which will let students increase their time-on-task in a way that doesn't disrupt the class. These alternative seating options will help accomplish this. Studies have found that alternate seating will help students to concentrate, increase productivity, and memory. It is also proven to decrease off-task tendencies and disruptive behavior problems. I plan to use these items as needed to fit each child and the task at hand.
