My stagecraft students are responsible for building all of our show elements (costumes, props, and set). Unfortunately, we are using a lot of things that are old and outdated or very cheap. We need some heavier duty tools that will stand up to the wear and tear that they face. Power tools, drills and sanders, and use of sewing machines, stitchers and sergers, can help these students tackle projects that they will face later in life with the knowledge needed to safely do so. I teach them to safely use these objects so that they can apply these skills later in life. Most students I have do not have knowledge about power tools or how to fix clothes if there is something wrong with them. My class focuses on applying these element in response to building sets, making props and altering and building costumes. This skills will be something that they carry with them for the rest of their lives.
