Because we use a reader’s workshop approach, students get to read books that they enjoy at their independent reading level. This will help my 1st graders organize their materials and be able to become better readers because they’ll have a way to keep the books they enjoy. First graders like to explore everything they come across, so this will be a good way to learn more about their interests. Also, at this age, teaching students organizational skills is an important thing. A way to do this is to start by organizing their book boxes and keeping their books together to be easily accessed.
