I am a 1st grade teacher at a first year turn around school in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. About 80% of my students are far below where they should be currently as a first grade reader. My students have began to grow a huge love and appreciation for reading, but we need some more materials besides just books to build up our phonemic awareness, and basic reading skills. These centers will be very useful during our daily reading rotations to help the students build on their basic reading skills. They will provide easy to use and understand directions and manipulatives in order to identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words, sort and switch similar sounds, as well as determine the amount of syllables in a word.
