The area is known for violent crime. The facilities are old and outdated. Every surface is thick with paint that covers graffiti. Poverty and violence are pervasive. Stress and grief color everything and fear is an undercurrent that does not leave. Yet like HS students everywhere, the girls cluster to share makeup tips and the guys organize competitions. My high school students are struggling to stay focused despite the high frequency of violent crime. Part of our classroom time is given over to coping with the emotional stuff that follows crises, waves of crises. They come from loving families, but resources are limited both at school and at home. School supplies and nurture are in short supply. Parents work 2 jobs to pay the rent. I regularly raid my own kitchen for supplies to use on labs, and spend my free time listening & counseling.
