All the students in our alternate assessment unit, ages 4 to 14, are on the autism spectrum. The school is comprised entirely of students with disabilities; the middle-school unit at our school, which is standard-assessed, is composed of students with emotional and behavioral disturbances. Slightly more than half of the students with autism are non-verbal, or with extremely limited verbal skills. There is a major emphasis at the school for AAC, or alternative and augmentative communication. However, all are able-bodied, with few or no physical limitations. Given the space restraints at our urban school, taking "neighborhood walks" outside is an ideal activity for all students. For the past two years, I (the adaptive PE teacher) have led students of all ages on countless walks around the neighborhood, estimating how much we have walked. Most classes have walked far more than 26.2 miles over the course of the year, but it has never been measured precisely...until now!
