A classroom library is an integral part of the elementary school literacy program. A high-quality classroom library provides students access to not just any books but the right books—books that engage them as readers, support them as they grow, build reading skills and help promote a lifelong love of reading. Fountas and Pinnell (1996) recommend a classroom library with approximately 300-600 books. My first graders read approximately 10 books in class each week!
Allowing student voice and choice in what they want to read is shown to increase motivation and engagement. A wide variety of titles from different genres and at various reading levels will ensure that students can find books that best meet their needs and interests.
By funding this project, you will help enhance our current classroom library with a balance of both fiction and non-fiction texts. I have taken into account both student interests and typical first grade reading levels when creating this project. Let’s give these emergent readers a classroom library with books they want to read—quality literature that supports their interests and needs.
