With a class set of the novel Wonder, my students will gain knowledge of diversity and tolerance, while relating to life in Middle School. Our novel study will be coupled with a Random Acts of Kindness unit in which my students will bring kindness and compassion a bit closer to our world in Southwest Charlotte. They will read about Auggie and his struggles to find his way in Middle School, and will simultaneously be compiling a treasure trove of acts of kindness to perform on unsuspecting family, friends, classmates, and strangers. As they progress through the book and watch Auggie develop friendships, they will also narrate their experiences as they perform their personal random acts of kindness. The result will be a novel and LIFE study as they review the book and create their culminating KINDNESS project.
