Family and Consumer Science classes cover a multitude of life lessons! In an effort to enhance classroom learning and to encourage student led lessons, much of the learning comes from researching articles and collaborating with group members to present information to the class. Some of the units covered in my curriculum include personal development, child care and development, foods and nutrition, housing, consumerism, sewing construction, to name a few. My students work in groups quite often when we need internet access. Our only access to school computers is in one of our three computer labs, which are actually designated for core classes.
By donating to this project, you will be providing my students with an endless amount of current information at their fingertips that would broaden their horizons; so much more than what my limited knowledge can provide. Five chromebooks would provide one for each group to use for research and preparing presentations. One of the projects we have done in the past is a unit called CHOPPED in which the students participated with their group to solve a break-out box activity that revealed what the ingredients were to be used. They used the computers as a group to solve the puzzles to get the boxes open. Then they researched recipes that could be prepared using the ingredients they had access to. Then they completed the recipe. It was so much fun! We also have an International Food Study in which each group chooses a country or region to research and prepare a power-point presentation for the class.
Many of my students do not have computers at home and even if they did, they would miss out on the opportunity to learn the important lesson of working and collaborating with others. Thank you for choosing us!
