This project is focused on flexible seating. Studies show that flexible seating increases motivation, student engagement, and facilitates student interactions. Science research explains that the adolescent brain, at this stage, craves and benefits from movement; however, the school schedule only allows for 30 minutes of lunch, no recess, and PE is not every day. The idea is to create a safe, comfortable, and choice-driven environment so the students can focus on their academic and social development. My students are very creative, spontaneous, and high energy; they are inquisitive minds with active bodies and spend more time trying to find ways to spend that energy than focused on learning. The requested rug and bean bags are to create relaxed front of classroom seating. The yoga balls will provide students with the chance to change their potential energy into kinetic energy without being a distraction to others or to themselves; they can naturally adjust their position to maintain balance. The stools will accompany desks on bed risers to create a layered effect wherein all students can see the board. Finally, the tangles, mouse pads, and fidget toys are for students who need hand movement or desk drumming. This will allow them to move without distracting others with tapping.
