Gemstone mining kits will enhance my ability to teach my students about the different properties of minerals, such as luster, hardness, color, and density. When we study the rock cycle, my students will learn about the processes that create and transform the different types of rocks in the Earth's crust. Giving them the opportunity to sort the different types of rocks they learn about enhances their understanding of properties used for classification. Some of my students might be familiar with the appearance and feel of a few gemstones that have been cut and tumbled, but most have no idea what they look like in their raw form. Giving my students the opportunity to sift and search through ore to find and sort colorful minerals and raw gemstones will provide them with an experience they are sure to remember and tell their parents about. These kinds of activities generate curiosity and interests in young minds. My students will not only have a really memorable hands on learning opportunity, but they may start to learn more about their personal interests.
