Our reading workshop is designed around providing short mini-lessons teaching a strategy that students use on their self-selected novels. Currently, our libraries are filled with hand-me down books that make it really difficult to overcome the stereotype to 'not judge a book by its cover'. We need interesting and exciting books to ignite critical/creative thinking, and more importantly, the love of reading.
Smelling the fresh pages of a recommended book, sitting in the corner against a comfy pillow and sharing favorite parts with a best friend should be what reading is all about. Let's make this happen for our fifth graders! These students struggle to find enjoyable books that they want to discuss. Their time spent procrastinating by 'finding' a book in the library can now be transferred to quickly grabbing a story and jumping right in.
This library will have books of all genres and will target the fifth grade reading level. Students will work in partnerships to read stories and discuss with the focus strategies in mind. They will work on deepening their thinking about their reading and be able to communicate their ideas through writing. These books can be used to enhance discussions, reviewed by students to recommend to peers, analysed critically to create movie trailers or a play, the list goes on. The fifth grade team needs your help to make this dream come true.
