Our first-grade teachers use the balanced literacy approach during our reading instruction. This time allows teachers to meet with students at their academic reading level. It also allows students to become proactive, independent readers and writers through multiple reading, writing, and word work stations. These phonics books and writing journals will allow students to have activities at their level that promote independent reading and writing skills. The phonics books will be to increase carry over from working with a teacher to independent phonics skills. The writing journals will allow students to express various opinion and narrative ideas through writing and illustrations.
