Our school currently has a Learning Garden for our students. Our garden gives students the opportunity to plant, water, and harvest different vegetables and herbs throughout the school year. Students from different grade levels come together to plant and water seeds that produce a fall, spring, and summer garden. Students feel a sense of ownership and pride as they see the seeds they plant turn into vegetables. After harvesting the crops, students are able to eat the vegetables as they experiment with different healthy recipes. They are also able to take vegetables home to their families, which promotes healthy eating.
This year we would like our students to plant and harvest a wider variety of seeds and crops. We would also like to add a butterfly garden and bird feeders to our garden space. My students will need soil to plant flowers for our butterfly garden, seeds that will produce a variety of vegetables and herbs, and gardening tools that will allow us to maintain our garden throughout the year.
