Students learn science by doing science, and science experiments are the favorite part of science class for most students. However, most science curricula for middle school students fail to connect what students learn in the classroom to the real world that they live in. It simply isn't enough to spend 3 days of the school year on a field trip or out in a field. Students should have regular access to natural phenomena that they can explore as they build knowledge. Having an indoor pond and hydroponic garden in the classroom will allow my students to engage in ongoing, in-depth science experiments. Not only will interactive science help students develop stronger science skills, but it will also increase student interest in science. Whether studying how the parts of the pond ecosystem work together, or determining how to improve the yield of the vegetables, the interactive science room will provide students with meaningful challenges and fond memories.
