Skill-appropriate books are a vital resource for teaching literacy. With these books, I can match individual readers to books they are ready to read. Doing this provides meaningful practice for the student, and perhaps more importantly, promotes an interest in reading that will lend itself to future instruction. Without these basic literacy tools, the students in this classroom are facing mounting frustration with reading, and we are left trying to teach them to read with skill-mismatched books while the children become increasingly uninterested in reading at all. Perhaps the best thing about this particular investment is the opportunity to make a difference at the community level. Many of the students in this classroom come from homes where one or both parents are themselves illiterate. The cycles leading to limited education and income in this community can, in part, be broken by getting these children the literacy-learning tools they need.
