The concerns in a typical Elementary / Middle schooler's day might include family changes, friend problems, school work overload, and social pressures. Sometimes it all gets to be too much and it comes out through anger, conflict, or anxiety in my students. I'd like to turn my school counseling office into a zen den space with a salt lamp, desktop fountain, kid-friendly books of mindfulness, and a buddha board to show them how to put negative thoughts down and watch them disappear. By teaching my 3-15 year old students how to identify and release negative thoughts and feelings, they'll learn skills on how to manage emotions that they'll carry with them as they grow up. Giving kids a place to stop and breathe for a minute in our fast-paced world helps them get centered and back to a better mindset to be ready to learn in the classroom. Since school counseling support is short-term and solution focused, having an atmosphere and tools to supplement my lessons will help me make a bigger impact on my students.
