I have been a New Hampshire educator for 15 years. This fall will begin my 5th year teaching kindergarten in our town. This project includes a broad list of sturdy educational dramatic play toys that will be rotated through three separate kindergarten classrooms during the academic year. Because of that, when you support this project, you are helping 54 students year after year deepen their knowledge of the world and help them grow their love of learning. This project will be supporting three classes and various classroom centers which prove very popular in kindergarten as they can be rotated through seasonally to peak children’s interests and provide enriched learning opportunities. Students are thrilled to find centers thoughtfully reinvented throughout the year. These toys will support centers such as a farm stand, animal shelter, construction site, Santa’s Workshop, a cookie and cocoa shop, a pizza parlor, and an an ice cream parlor. The opportunities to reinvent and imagine new uses for these toys are only limited by the childrens’ imaginations. In 2018, New Hampshire legislature passed house bill 1499 which introduced play based education standards into kindergarten. This welcome change has reinforced the importance of thoughtful, developmentally appropriate child-directed play-based learning. With guidance and support from the New Hampshire department of education and the University of New Hampshire, our school has been fortunate to form a mentor/coach relationship with experts in play-based learning. Because of that support, we are implementing an hour of teacher-guided and child-driven exploratory learning into our daily schedule. These toys will be a valuable asset to our kindergarten classrooms. Thank you so much for considering this project that is near and dear to my heart.
