My third graders love being able to sit down as a class to read and discuss stories. Though we are able to do this through read alouds, our classroom is lacking in enough reading materials for each student to use. Having a class set of the story The One and Only Ivan will allow my students to participate in a classroom book club. Book club will allow students to work in cooperative learning groups where each student will take on a variety of leadership roles. Students will benefit from having their own books because they will be able to follow along at their own pace, as well as go back and look through the book to provide evidence to the opinions they have voiced. The One and Only Ivan is the perfect book for my class because it is a story of courage--which is something that will touch the hearts of my students who are learning to become advocates for themselves.
