I run a very high energy classroom where students are excited to learn new things in brand new ways. As a class, we are always investigating and trying new things out. My class consists of twenty-nine 8-9-year-old children. They are expected to sit in stiff, uncomfortable seats day in and day out for hours on end. As an adult, these expectations are even high for me. By having access to these wobble chairs, they will be able to have the opportunity to be able to move while working in class! Not only will this help with focus and attention during work time and lessons, but it will also provide the outlet for the movement they need. My students would love the opportunity to get their wiggles out during instruction time without disrupting the entire class. These chairs are meant to help students engage in "active sitting”. Without good lighting, teachers can't instruct and students can't learn. As you probably already know, lighting is a major factor in the brain’s ability to focus. In fact, poor lighting can reduce how effectively the brain collects information. Over time, if the pattern of learning under poor lighting persists, the brain can become slower at absorbing new information. The physical environment plays an important role in the lives of students. It adds an important dimension to a child’s learning experience and development when their physical environment is carefully and thoughtfully designed. Poor lighting affects a student’s ability to read accurately on paper, a whiteboard or computer display. Lighting is also a factor in psychological health when a person is in one room for the majority of the day. As many teachers can attest, spending a significant amount of time under sub-standard lighting can negatively affect one's mood.
