Many of my students were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and are still unable to return to a traditional in-person school setting. By offering weekly in person opportunities in small groups, students will be able to engage in social interactions with their peers while experiencing hands on projects to support their learning. The opportunity to interact with other students in small groups is one that means the world to my students. In fact, because they are in first grade, NONE of my students have attended school in person before! Given the unique circumstances of my students, this year our class will be putting a special emphasis on social and emotional learning. Providing my students with a calming corner will help to support them in their social and emotional learning while recovering from the traumas endured throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Having a calming corner will enable my students to put into action the coping mechanisms they learn through our lessons, including quietly reading a book, coloring a calming coloring page, finding a quiet space to close your eyes and breathe, care for our class plants, and so many more! The items chosen for this essential area in my classroom are all designed to promote a calm, peaceful environment in which students can socialize, learn, and heal alongside their peers.
