Most teachers will say that good readers are able to listen. In many households, reading every night is a part of the daily routine. However, many students, including many in my classroom, do not have that advantage. Listening to audio books or live-recordings are a vital part in helping students acquire language skills. In many cases where listening centers are being used, student fluency and decoding skills become more proficient throughout the year. This listening center will allow students to push their boundaries. Every single day, both the English Language Learners and general education students are exposed to conversational language. This listening center provides a way to differentiate academic content for students who may be slightly below reading level. This listening center that contains a CD player, audio books, and headphones would really help level the playing field. Right now, our CD player is not reliable and therefore causes disruption during our center activity time. It is absolutely critical that my students have access to these materials to help them actively pursue our classroom goals.
