My students love hands-on lab explorations, in which they examine evidence, record their observations, analyze their data, reach conclusions, and communicate their findings. During our study of evolution, students will examine several types of evidence that explain relatedness of species to each other and ancient species. Understanding the fossil record is important, yet many of my students lack practical experience with rocks and geological formations, so making the connection to fossil formation and paleontology can be a challenge. The fossils, fossil replicas, and fossil record model in this project will provide students with multiple ways of seeing and understanding the fossil evidence that contributes to our understanding of evolution.
