I am asking for thirty copies of Understanding Greek Myths and thirty copies of The Circulatory Story. The first book completes a unit of exploration of the heart both biologically and as a symbol of human caring. "The Circulatory Story" is coupled with a modern poetry novel that challenges students to understand the complexity of the heart. "Understanding Greek Myths" exposes my young fourth graders to another level of writing. Reaching that "a-ha!" moment when connections are made to their lives is what teaching is all about. What does it mean to think with our hearts and explore the relevance of Greek mythology through literacy? These are the questions we will raise through literature while we attempt to translate our discoveries through writing. Yes, it's true, a majority of my students struggle in reading and writing due to their second language skills but it goes without saying that it is because of rich material like this that maintains their interest.
