As a teacher, I strive to find texts that will connect with my students, hoping that it will spark a genuine interest in reading. This text will allow me to more easily teach topics such as character analysis, forming a claim, predicting, and inferring as well as different elements of figurative language. When I'm able to engage the students with a text they enjoy, the learning process becomes much easier and, at times, even fun. Beyond that, I hope their engagement in the story will motivate them to keep up and ask questions when they don't understand an element of the story. Since the ultimate goal is to improve reading comprehension, I believe focusing on a thoughtful story with relatable characters will help their reading grow and develop.
