Since the focus is Simple Machines, you might think that learning the concepts are easy. However, when students do not have access to hands-on tools to make the learning engaging and touchable, then the students have a harder time grasping the necessary concepts. When my students hear the words fulcrum, effort, and load, they think of many different ideas besides a lever. They might think that a fulcrum is something they find in a video game, that effort is something that they provide on their own on a test, and that a load is similar to a load of laundry. With our new Nascos SciQuest Motion Kit, my students will have the chance to really learn what simple machines are and how they are used in everyday life to make tasks easier. They will be able to go through different activities that will lead up to using the materials in the kit to complete a Rube Goldberg project. Please help my students fully understand that fulcrum, effort, and load are parts of a lever system, that a pulley is something they see everyday with the high flying American Flag, and that a wheel and axel work together to make their bikes ridable and their skateboards move.
